Wimberley,
TX 3/11/08- Last season, eighteen-year-old Trey Mitchell became the latest
success story behind the wheel of a late model stock car from the state of
Texas. A state well known for its “bigger is better attitude,” however, when it
comes to late model stock car racing or asphalt stock car racing, in general the
state of Texas is less to be desired. The Texas Super Racing Series is the only
Texas based touring series which is classified more as a limited late model
series. It is for this reason that Texas natives such as Mitchell are accustomed
to the travels involved in finding a competitive series which also brings the
exposure necessary to move forward in a sport driven by being noticed.
Now in 2008 Mitchell will look to compete in the new nationally televised ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour with races held throughout the Southeastern United States starting March 22 at the Mobile International Speedway. The series will feature fifteen events with eight of those being televised tape delayed on various networks throughout the nation. Veteran crew chief and legendary short track racer Freddie Query will call the shots for Mitchell at the half mile high banked oval. But for Mitchell all things have yet to come together just a few weeks before the season gets under way.
“We are still in search of a sponsor so we can run the entire season schedule. We would like to run at least the television races because we know that would be phenomenal exposure for any type of company nationwide. Plus I got a great crew chief in Freddie Query to work with so I know we will be heading into the event with really high hopes on a solid finish, so if we could just find a little bit of funding we would be all set,” said Mitchell.
Last season Trey was a newcomer to the pro late model world where he competed in a limited number of events at the South Alabama Speedway in Opp, AL where in just his first trip to the track grabbed the pole position in qualifying and posted a solid fifth place finish. The Texas native who has now relocated to the Charlotte, North Carolina area to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte realizes now more than ever that the business side of racing is just as important as the on track performance.
“Racing is not like it used to be where if you won races you had sponsors calling to put a deal together. Now it’s more like what can you offer a sponsor both on and off the track; performance is one thing but to be able to match a company’s marketing goals to go along with winning races is what really counts. So all we can do now is just keep doing what we can and hope someone is out there seeking a great way to market their products or services nationally through a motorsports marketing program such as Trey Mitchell Racing,” stated Mitchell with a smile.
